The following events were held to promote understanding of aphasia in the Australian community.

QUEENSLAND:

Wynum Foreshore - Brisbane: FREE Sausage Sizzle

  • When? 10am to 12pm on Wednesday 16th September
  • Who was invited? Everyone
  • Radio station 4KQ was there to provide publicity.
  • Information about aphasia was handed out to everyone.

Parliament House - Brisbane: INVITATION ONLY luncheon

  • An invitation only luncheon was also held in Brisbane at Parliament House.
  • Politicians and celebrities were invited to meet people with aphasia and their carers.


Northlakes, Redcliffe, Caboolture: Community Based Rehabilitation Team Event

  • An information and awareness event was run on the Northside by the Community Based Rehabilitation Team
  • All were welcome

Logan Chatters Aphasia Group - Logan: "Friday Without Words"

  • Logan Chatters Aphasia Group held their event on Friday - "Friday Without Words"
  • Group members had a morning tea to celebrate Stroke Week and Friday Without Words

Hunter Region: University of Newcastle SILENCE-A-THON!

  • Speech Pathology Students from the University of Newcastle held a Silence-a-thon to raise awareness and money!

St Joseph's Hospital - Regents Park Sydney: MORNING TEA

  • A morning tea was held at St Joseph's Hospital with a talk on aphasia by a speech pathologist and posters advertising aphasia around the hospital


Northern Sydney Aphasia Group and the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney: STALL AT GLADESVILLE SHOPPING CENTRE

  • THe Northern Sydney Aphasia Group and the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney held a Stroke Week and Wednesday Without Words Stall
  • Where? Gladesville Shopping Centre
  • People with aphasia, carers and speech pathologists were there and talked to the community about aphasia.

Darwin: Lyons Community Centre Information Morning

  • An information morning was held at the Lyons Community Centre to raise awareness

Cardinia Casey Conversation Group - Cranbourne: Morning Tea for clients, carers and staff

  • An invitation only morning tea was held by the Cardinia Casey Conversation Group


Peter James Centre - Forest Hill: Information Sessions and display board

  • The Speech Pathology Department at the Peter James Centre co-ordinated a display board and information sessions


TASMANIA:

North West Regional Hospital - Burnie, Tasmania: LUNCH

  • An invitation only lunch was held at the North West Regional Hospital


The Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania: QUIZ

  • Allied Health Departments at the Royal Hobart Hospital did a small quiz on aphasia
  • Posters advertising Wednesday Without Words were also put in hospital lifts


SOUTH AUSTRALIA:

Talkback Association for Aphasia Inc - South Australia: MORNING TEA

  • A morning tea with guest speakers was run by the Talkback Association for Aphasia Inc.

St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospital: SILENT MORNING TEA

  • St Margaret's Rehabilitation Hospital held a "silent" morning tea and also had an information display for the general public


Noarlunga Hospital: INFORMATION DISPLAY

  • Noarlunga Hospital organised an information display about aphasia for the general public


Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre: MORNING AND AFTERNOON TEAS

  • Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre held a morning tea for staff who were only allowed to use drawing or miming to communicate
  • An afternoon tea was also held for people who had received aphasia treatment at the Centre in the last 12 months.
